A popular year round drive is inside Clear Creek Canyon in far northern Chaffee County. In the fall this drive offers spectacular aspen viewing.
From Buena Vista, travel 15 miles north on Highway 24 and make a left (west) at Clear Creek Reservoir. Although there may be some potholes and washboard areas, Chaffee County Road 390, the main road through the canyon, is a dirt road that can be driven in an ordinary passenger vehicle.
Enjoy the autumn colors in the canyon, as forest surrounds the road with mountain views afar. At the six mile mark is the historic Vicksburg ghost town, once a bustling mining camp at the turn of the 20th Century. The parking lot for the Missouri Gulch Trail is across the road, and typically it is a good place to walk among the fall colors.
Another four miles ahead is Winfield, a “sister town” of Vicksburg founded during the same era. At Winfield, driving ATV’s among the fall foliage on some of the much rougher 4WD roads and trails are a popular activity during the fall season.
